Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Pontet-Canet opens with a hedonistic nose of Black Forest cake, crème de cassis and blueberry tart, plus notes of candied violets, hoisin, mint chocolate, charcuterie and forest floor with a touch of star anise. Full-bodied, rich, deeply layered and powerfully fruity, the palate is built like a brick house, with very firm, super-mature, grainy tannins and harmonious freshness, finishing with incredible length and depth. It's still incredibly primitive and yet it's already laid down so many layers, that I wouldn't be at all surprised if it warranted the 100 point rating in a few years.
